VSME
Abbreviation for voluntary sustainability reporting standard for small and medium-sized undertakings
In short and in plain language
VSME is an EU standard for small and mid-sized firms.
Firms may use it if they want to.
With it they share data on things like energy use and accidents at work.
The EU put it forward in July 2025. Since September 2026 the new voluntary standard VS applies instead.
Definition
VSME refers to the voluntary sustainability reporting standard for small and medium-sized undertakings developed by EFRAG, the European Commission's technical advisory body for sustainability reporting. The Commission recommended it in Recommendation (EU) 2025/1710 of 30 July 2025. It is split into a basic module and a comprehensive module. Since 24 September 2026 the recommendation is no longer considered legally effective; the voluntary standard VS builds on it and keeps both modules.
