assessment period

In short and in plain language

The assessment period is the time in which the tax office can set a tax.

During this time it can also change a tax notice.

While this time runs, some records are still needed. Then you keep them for longer.

Definition
The assessment period is the time within which the tax office can assess a tax, that is, issue or amend a tax assessment notice. The German Fiscal Code governs its length and start. Retention periods can be extended as long as records are relevant for taxes whose assessment period is still running.
